THE ROOT OF NATIONAL DECAY
It is imperative we discuss the issue of Nigeria’s decay with the aim of setting our minds on a positive path of making Nigeria better and as an excellent benchmark for the world. There has always been the question; “can Nigeria ever be better?” this obviously is a big concern for so many of us. Most of us hue and cry about the situation in our country and sometimes wish we can wake up one beautiful morning and see the nation of our dreams formed from heaven.
First of all, Nigerians must stop thinking that the reason for their plight is lack of money or the infection of poverty. The fact remains that we are earning more money today than any time in our history. Yet we have been as poor and destitute as we are today. Meanwhile, the budget of Nigeria exceeds that of some European countries likewise some African and Asian countries whereas the living standard of people in these countries are far better.
What is the truth?
Money and even natural or mineral resources is not enough to empower a nation’s wealth because Nigeria is a full description of the fact that the presence or absence of money is not the reason for poverty. Poverty is simply an infection of the mind. That is why you find abject poverty in the midst of abundance even in developed countries. What determines whether a nation is going to advance in development or regress into oblivion is in her values. I mean basic national principles and the belief system of its people.
In Nigeria, we have become poor in integrity, hard work, diligence, excellence and even good governance before we became poor physically and materially. This poverty of the spirit and soul led us to the devastation of the physical existence; our economy, infrastructure, etc. in a country where anybody will do anything to gain a position of influence without adequate qualifications, merits or performance; degeneration in national value is therefore inevitable. No amount of money or natural resources can help a nation that is addicted to wealth accumulation and possessive privileges, instead of hard work, distinction and service; greed, deception, and corruption would therefore become the order of the day. Our youths bring themselves more in the cheap desire to be popular than in the desire to be distinguished by a noble course. That the society lacks excellence, production and justice, it is important to state that money and wealth don’t build character; they only expose the lack of it.
Our nation is a country of pleasure at the slightest opportunity and at all cost, whereas pleasure is supposed to be reserved only to the diligent. No wonder we have all the violence, crime, robbery, 419 and recently “yahoozee”.
Leadership is not only our problem.
Another delusion that Nigerians must get out of their mind is the perception that the root of our national problem is in wrong leadership. As important as leadership is, I beg to declare that when it comes to running a nation, the role of one or few don’t become the sole determining factor. A country gets the kind of leadership she deserves. This is because the leaders are not imported from the enemy nations; they were born and bred in our society and the value system of that society mould them into whom they are either good or bad.
No matter how many government leaders you change, their attitudes and behavior remain the same, as long as they are brought up in that particular culture either corrupt or correct. In a society that the value system is wrong, even when the leaders are taking the right actions and decisions, which causes pain and inconvenience, the people will revolt because they can’t see far and their mindset does not support delayed gratification.
The biggest problem of Nigeria is not bad leadership but the corrupt mind set of her people or much more our corrupt value system. We need a renewal of the mind as a nation. This will not happen by itself automatically, we need to proactively propose values to the society until our minds are renewed. There is no transformation without renewal of the mind. Likewise, there is no limitation in life but the limitation of the mind.
The biggest need of Nigeria today is “national orientation”. It has become important for us to work out national ideas, virtues, values and principles that we want to see till they become the prevailing culture and mindset of our people. Virtues like hard work, faithfulness, excellence, patience, perseverance, diligence, love, honor, order, discipline and service must become the prevailing natural characteristics of our nation. For this to be accomplished, the government must energize the efforts of various religious movements, social and public organizations to champion this crusade in public institutions including government parastatals.
Seminars and symposiums should be organized all over the nation to clean the minds of our people from the philosophy of instant gratification without paying the price, and success without sacrifice is equal to corruption. A country that must be great must get her value system in order.
Principles of national transformation
Here are some principles that must be planted in the mind and hearts of our people:
Transformation of the nation begins with the transformation of individuals by the values of truth, integrity, justice etc.
Every citizen must be taught to respect the land and his neighbor. Your good is my good. I need you, you need me. Mutual responsibilities, duties and rights.
The role of foresight in national development because he that sees the future, controls that future and nation in technology, schools, science etc
Unity is a factor of progress, because any divided kingdom cannot stand. Unity must be around, law, justice, freedom, strong leadership etc.
We must know that the root of all national problems is sin, so we don’t fight people, we fight sin. Government must therefore create approaches that deal with decadent behaviors and actions much more than erring people. People are all good and can be saved if correct measures are applied.

You can truly dream and suceed!
To dream is to see the future in your imagination before it happens. The ability to dream is the greatest power in the world. Your dreams give you the opportunity to be free from present shortcomings. In your dreams, in your imaginations you can break free from failure, you can break free from poverty, you can break free from bondage because as a man thinketh in his heart so is he.
You must learn to dream for your tomorrow to be better than your today. Dreams give you direction once you see yourself in a new you; you know exactly where to go with your life. Dreams reveal your potentials; your past mistakes may have told you that you are a failure but in your dreams you see a new you doing things you could never do before.
Dreams motivate you, gives you hope, gives you a reason to live. Dreams also bring discipline into your life because you now know that any road will npt take you to the destination you are seeing in your dream. Dreams also determine your association and how much effort you will put into your education and the things you want to do.
Dreams make you a magnet; you begin to attract people and resources that will make that dream come to pass. Have a dream, pray, meditate; get close to successful people for your dreams to come to pass.
You must not allow your past experience to limit your dreams concerning tomorrow. If you allow your experience today to limit the size of your dream, you have cheated your tomorrow. Don’t let your history become your prophesy. It’s not easy to break free from our past experiences, our experiences create pictures in our heart and it makes it look difficult for us to succeed. However, it’s a fight, it’s a war we not allow our past to predict failure for us. We must believe that our tomorrow will be better than our yesterday.
By now, you should have a dream, a dream that causes the 'hot' blood to flow in your veins, and dreams that inspires and motivates you. You can turn your dream into reality by first developing a plan, calculate from where you are and where you are heading to, give it a time limit, and set specific goals.
Lastly, develop your skills. Promotion is only reward for problems that you solve. Give the small opportunities that you have now your best shot; you must work hard and develop expertise. When a man is an expert on his job, he will stand before kings and not common men. Finally, make a move, things don’t move until you make a move. You have to turn those dreams into reality because they won’t turn themselves into reality.
